....and only because its funny.

Just how many dimensions does this world have? I'm not on about the current theory of the Universe, string mechanics or 'brain dimensions. I'm talking about the state of peoples minds and how we change at different rates in relation to others..... and on occasions chemical imbalances either prescription induced or recreational.

Talking of mad bastards and chemically induced states I'd just like to confirm that at this moment in time I have nothing against Simon. (Simon is a mate from another time (space and interface) that has in the last few weeks become a figment of my reality). In fact, I think he's a bit of a lord. No really, as I sit here soaking up a cocktail of Tramadol and Citalopram with a hint of Miles Hunt's "Note to self" filling the air with it's own "string vibrations" I can only admire Simon's current position within society and contributions made.

So, Simon, stop being a bit of a cock, no-one is taking sides (ok, I might be, or could that be paranoia?).

Come on, get ya finger out (no pun intended) and have some Brother Lee Love. I understand you have difficulty playing the guitar nowadays, although I'd doubt I'd notice any difference, but don't let that encourage me. You could always join in on all the other fine things us middle aged fat and baldy bastards would like to get up to but cant anymore.
After all, some of us will be dead soon.

Name that cover art

Do you think this image was the inspiration behind that Vinyl cover art?

Ardvreck Castle

Come on Goober, name that Single/Mini LP and band...... actually, if you know me then you already know that there's less than a handful of Bands it could be.... ok, perhaps just two then.... and it doesn't look like something shot in Birmingham....

Narrower than an IBM managers imagination.

Arse.

10 years and me....

Sitting on ya arse with nothing much to do has always been an incentive for me to become creative. In recent months/years it's been with the still camera, but occasionally, I have been known to fanny about with the camcorder.

Usually this has been around my "brother-from-another-mother" Goober, when he's been either gigging, rehearsing or maybe the odd road trip.

So. I dug out the "Simon Wood shagged this Video" DVD which I compiled in 2003 from a weekend trip to Cambridge in 1998 where we (Goober, Simon, myself and not forgetting Pete Moore) hired a studio for no other reason than to celebrate 10 years since the last time we were actively in a band.

So it's 10 years on. Lots of things have changed. I no longer have to imagine what it must be like to work alongside The Wonder Stuff, nor do I feel the need to ignore Mr Wood..... maybe I need to explain.

Mr Wood and I seldom got on (he's the guitarist.... actually, do any drummers and guitarists get on?), lets just put it down to a personality clash.... He probably had one and I didn't.... or something along those lines. Anyhow, I've not spoken to the fella since August 1998, and I think it's worked out just fine but I'm always open to new experiences and if anyone from "Edd Smash & The Dinosaur Wangs" wanna do a 20th anniversary get together then I guess I'll be up for it....... I even know of a decent rehearsal/studio.

I digress..... I sat down yesterday morning, and played the DVD "Simon Wood Shagged this Video". I was quite surprised how good the "shagged" bits were, even more surprised how funny the The Wonder Stuff piss takes were and just a little impressed with Goobers "Miles Hunt" impressions.

So, here they are, warts and all.

Pete Moore: Rhythm method guitar
Goober: Bass, Vocalist, songwriter and Vehicle delivery operative
Simon Wood: Lead Guitar, antagonist and shagger of videos, accommodation
Dave Dawson: Drums, gobshite, cameraman

".....recording new tracks for the EP"

Can you get your people to talk to my people darling? I shall be "in session" recording the new EP, hmmm, hmmm, hmmmmmmmmmm.

So, it's all set. Finally we get to etch our acoustic vibrations onto the waxy cylinder Thomas Eddison raved about in 1066 just before he fell on an arrow. Please, not all at once!....... you'll get a chance to listen or even BUY this EP at some point as we know a clever man who can transfer an Eddison Cylinder into 0's and 1's and make it appear on a tellyputer in EmpeeIII

This isn't the first time I've had the pleasure of being directly involved in producing some form of music, in 1999 and 2000 I funded, arranged, directed, shouted, shoved, fed and watered Goober to produce a couple of "cottage industry" CD's that actually made enough lolly to.... well.... buy a few lollies actually. My Mate Pete was also in attendance and provided light entertainment and an assortment of sandwiches all washed down with lashing of ginger beer. Hurrah!

In fact, below is a vid I did from the "footage" I took while in the studio recording some "Goober". The track is "Brother" by Goober, inspired by a Friday night out in Easington Colliery and how some people change over time while others remain in a teenagers mind set..... or it could be about the demise of light engineering in the late 19th century.

Suspended by Stars

Last year I was given the golden opportunity of being the Drum Tech for The Wonder Stuff's 2006 Tour in the UK. That 3 week trip brought more emotion, experience and insite into how my favorite band puts things together than I could of imagined. From the camaraderie of everyone involved to the sheer professionalism I witnessed...... It was simply magical

I can only assume that to the rest of the seasoned crew and band I must of looked like a rabbit caught in headlights..... and for good reason, it's not often you get to work with pure genius.

Anyhow, I took an awful lot of photos, some of which had found there way onto the cover of the new Live double album soon to be released.

Just how honored and chuffed am I?

very chuffed indeed!

Careful what you wish for....

20 years ago I made a wish. I wished for a chance to play on stage with The Wonder Stuff.... and its kinda come true. I always thought of myself and Goober would somehow end up playing with TWS. Admittedly, I thought we'd have instruments and would be joining in and making the music, instead we find ourselves tech'ing together for Miles, Malc, Andres, Mark and Erica on this years 2006 Suspended by Stars Summer tour.

So, here's to my brother-from-another-mother..... dont dump on the bus and bring lots of gaffa tape and lashings of Ginger Beer.

Sometimes.....

Just dont even think about it. It's more addictive than directing your own play. I'm on about reviewing and editing your own DV tapes from 8 years ago. There's just so much stuff to go through.

Anyhow, here's one from the last nights tape, a tape I thought I'd lost years ago. Recorded at Skyline Studios at Epsom in July 1999.

On this one you'll find Goober, Keith Small (Pants Dance), Jez (Skyline Engineer) , our very own PT and some rare appearances of Rob Web (semi naked door puller) and some fat baldy bloke in a Sunderland top making a tit of himself.

Another Vid for you to view, I think this one could stand as a "pop" video on its own, even tho the sound quality is poor... what the hell, I like it anyhow.

Goober had no idea I was there with the camera, and as usual threw me a "Dawson, you're a complete arse with that camera" look. Anyhow, I think it turned out ok

The vid is hosted at a sharing site so it should stream instead of being downloaded first, I'm still playing so be patient.

Video killed the radio star

Powered by Castpost

It might work, I dunno. Click on the image to eventually see a small vid I did some years ago.

Some years ago, Goober and I (I was acting as "crap-manager" and camera fool) did a "gig" in Aberdeen in Scotland...... and things we're never the same again. Even now after so many years just the mention of "Aberdeen" will bring a sharp intake of breath and a nervous look over the shoulder from both of us. The Star-Wars cafe will always look like Scots-Bar in our eyes.

No, I'm not in the video.....(but Tiny Townsend is a dead ringer). The track is Hairy On the Inside by Miles Hunt

There's a cow bell in there somewhere......

I had an e-mail this morning, from my Brother from another Mother (Goober). It's a trip down memory lane, which can be found just south west of Amnesia Avenue if you need a point of reference

With his kind permission, I've published it below.

Minor Threat: January 1982 – September 1982

Vocals/Guitar - Alan Hunter
Lead Guitar – Stephen Forsyth
Bass – Goober
Drums – Dave Dawson

Minor Threat: Easington Collieries answer to Stiff Little Fingers, average age of the band was 14, four young lads from a mining town in the north east of England. Too young to play or rehearse in pubs and drinking places, they ended up going to the local vicar and asking to use the church hall, he couldn’t help them there so invited them to use his living room. After six weeks he lost patience with the noise, F words, broken furniture and hangers-on the band were attracting. He did however get them a back room of a rough pub called The Black Diamond; this was the nucleus for many future line ups.

So What / Anti Nowhere League
We Will Fuck You / The Exploited
I’m an Upstart / Angelic Upstarts

State Of Emergency: September 1982 – March 1983

Vocals – Alan Crawford
Guitar – Alan Hunter
Bass – Goober
Drums – John Crawford

State Of Emergency was created of two local punk bands Alan Hunter and Goober from Minor Threat and Alan and John Crawford from The Condemned, Alan and John were twins with the same tastes in punk rock. Alan and John were 18 while Alan and Goober were 15; this was there first band the pair had played gigs with and their first taste of actually writing and playing original material. I remember it was such a relief if we were trying to book a venue we would wait in the car while the older lads made the arrangements. My confidence grew in this band, I was always a shy young lad and suddenly I was looked upon as a one of the lads.

Guest Guitar Richard Wharton (June – August)

After I left State Of Emergency in March I hooked up with the two lads (Dave and Steve) that had started the ball rolling in the first place. The only shock was these two kids had become really good and tight. I remember leaving the first rehearsal and thinking feck me if we do a gig with State Of Emergency we’ll wipe the floor with them. We went on to create some great songs that none of us will forget, and had a few good minutes of local fame. One friend called us The Young Toy Dolls; this was a great compliment for the band and began a whole new chapter in my life. I was finally playing the music I had dreamed about and was adding my own personality to it. No longer embarrassed about what others were thinking I knew we were good and started to enjoy the praise given by others.

Guitar – Simon Wood (1986 – 1988)
Guitar – Alan Hunter (1984 – 1985)
Drums – Dave Dawson
Keys / Backing Vocals – Barry Hill (1987-1988)

The name says it all, the original line up for State Of Emergency, now mature and full of ideas and energy. Three song writers all fighting to take control, all working together as a unit my god it was no picnic. In 1985 Alan lost interest in the band because of its musical direction, you could see his heart just wasn’t in it any more.
The band narrowed to a three piece and became one of the best bands I have personally had pleasure playing with. In 1986 Steve left the band to play in a cover band called Picture Box; he was replaced by now friend of the band Simon Wood. Later that year they introduced keyboard player Barry Hill and finally had backing vocals once more. With this line up the band took on a U2 type sound and a more commercial value, Goober became full time songwriter and things went smooth for a while.

Lead Guitar – Ian Coburn (1990 – 1991)
Drums – Dave Dawson (1989 – 1990)
Drums – Paul Cairns (1990 – 1991)

A new beginning and a new chapter Just Us, after a year of not being in a band Dave and I joined up with two local musicians, both songwriters and both defined in their own right. I have never lived in anyone’s pockets as much as I did with this band; with countless rehearsals and jam sessions we never seamed to be ready or together for that matter. Not happy with the Delamitri sound I moved on in 1991 and the band split shortly after.

Vocals – Ian O’Brien
Lead Guitar – John Mowbray
Rhythm Guitar – Arthur Harriman
Bass – Goober
Drums – Tom Branigan

My Final attempt at being a bass player in a band, this band (Combinat) had not only backing from a record label; it even had an independent song writer Trevor Whittaker.
Spotted as I played in Just Us, Trevor asked me to come along to a rehearsal; we soon became friends and enjoyed each others company. Being in Combinat was like being a member of The Damned, it was real fun, every one in the band worked together, laughed together and when you were having an off day people were there to lift you. Playing live was a dream come true and sometimes the journey to and from gigs was as thrilling as playing.

Goober: January 1999 – December 2001

Acoustic Guitar / Vocals – Goober
Acoustic Guitar / Vocals – Keith Small (May 1999 – December 2001)

During my seven years away from the music scene I never really gave up the song writing, I would only write a song every couple of months, but family life and work had made the music side of me take a back seat. That was until the summer of 1998 when drummer and best friend Dave Dawson invited me to a Miles Hunt gig at Ronnie Scott’s in Birmingham. I watched with open mouth as Miles and Malc strutted their stuff and made two acoustic guitars sound like a full band, the next morning over breakfast I knew what Dave was about to say. Sure enough he asked if I had any new material and when I gave him the answer he set the wheels in motion. A recording Studio in Epsom was booked for the January and I had plenty of time to iron out the creases, an attempt to get our long time friend Simon Wood was tried but to no avail.
Eventually I did it solo, the result an eight track cd called “never loved bingo” a while after its release a work friend became very interested in my songs (Keith Small) after a few jam sessions we decided to work as a duo. Keith would appear at one gig and then I’d be solo the next, I enjoyed my time working with Keith, we had some great fun and ideas together. In late 2001 Keith decided to pursue a career in cad cam engineering, I eventually lost my faith in the music business. It seams it’s you look like, not what you sound like, these days and I have no chance if that’s the rules. I now work for a vehicle movement company, and live a happy family life. I can still remember the good and bad times as my songs always expressed, so thanks for the memories Goober.

Back to school

A few years ago I went to a school reunion for the Class of '83 (thats the year I left school)...... this is my story...

"Dave Dawson, Dicky Dawson?" .....and that's where I stopped. Suddenly realising there was nothing of significance which could have happened in the last 20 years since I last saw this person. Hoping that they remember something that will start the conversation off and avoid the cold hard fact I made no impact on their lives whatsoever.......... it sounds scary doesn't it. That moment when you realise the other person has "no idea who the hell you are", "why you're here", and more importantly, "why you are talking to them". It can be scary.... that's the natural reaction, the unnatural reaction would be to spin out the most ridiculous story of human achievement/suffering you can conjure up in approximately 5 minutes of conversation with someone who has the balls to stand there and not remember who you were at school...... how dare they.

At least that what I thought. Not at first of course.... It took at least half a bottle of JD before I formulated my plan to keep me entertained. Thanks Goober!

The art of bullshitting someone who you've just met for no other reason than entertainment is fast becoming one of my top pastimes. But only when the time is right. Its a bit like the summer/winter solstice at Stone Henge, for 363 days of the year Stone Henge is a bunch of old stones robbing valuable agricultural land from some local farmer, but come the solstice it transforms into an intersteller pangalactic roadmap to the n'th dimension which attracts travellers & gipo's like a council tip on bin day.

On this occasion, my solstice happened to be a combination of heavy drinking, insufferable boredom and not actually liking anyone I met (this was to change as the night went on!).

I probably need to set the scene for anyone who does not know what the hell I'm on about... well, thanks to the world wide web I found out there was a school reunion in the small mining town I grew up in. 1983 seems to be the year it was based on, which also happens to be the final year of our internment in state education and the point at which we were spewed forth onto a blank canvas entitled "Life". The soundtrack for this was a combination of The Jam/Stiff Little Fingers/Big Country/U2 with a little Human League and Frankie Goes to Hollywood thrown in to remind you that sh*t sticks and never to underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.
Its 19 years on. Everyone will be in the 35/36 age range. Should be a right owld giggle.

It took four hours, fifteen minutes for me to drive the 330 miles back to Peterlee. Non stop. Which isn't bad for a Saturday morning. Arrived at Goobers in the afternoon and was greeted in the traditional Easington Colliery/Peterlee manner. Several tonal grunts and the offer of instant coffee. It was going to be a good day.

I should point out that Goober is my official "Brother From Another Mother". We share most things in life except bodily fluids and footballing tastes. We have an internal sense of each others humour, which can make it difficult for anyone else who happens to join us as they usually have no idea what we're on about and tend to wander off in search of saner company..... But what the hell, its all part of being smarter than the average bear.

Easington Comprehensive was an unusual school. Split into two some years afore, the "Lower" school was for 1st to 3rd years while the newer larger "Upper" school was for 4th/5th years with an important inclusion.......... "Murtoners". Murton is another small mining town about 8 miles north west of Easington. For some reason the local authority decided that it would close Murtons own school (I'm assuming Murton actually had a school) and send all its future yackers to Easington and let them mix it with the rest of us. I think it was a smart move, for no other reason than I met a lot of people who changed the way I thought about stuff, and mostly for the better.

Anyhow, back to the reunion. We were getting a lift to the Village Inn in Easington from Shelly to meet up with some of the lads. I was wearing my "smoke & mirrors" outfit....... black shirt, black trousers, black shoes, leather jacket with "I'M NOT FAT" in 4 inch letters on the back (this is only visible to me you understand). Goober on the other hand does not need to convince people of anything so donned his Scarborough shirt heavily impregnated with Lynx and a nice pair of jeans..... We looked like the bast**d offspring of Steptoe & Son. It REALLY was gonna be a top night.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Starwars Cafe.

There were two large halls, one full of disco equipment and the other full of cast members from the Starwars cafe. Its an eerie feeling walking into a room full of people who vaguely look like small children you once went to school with.... Names would drift through the ether, pick a victim and mug their ability to recall any details of that person. I believe taking large quantities of magic mushrooms has the same effect.

It soon became apparent that the best course of action would be to stand against the far wall and try to workout which names could possibly match a face, then attempt to remember whether or not that person was gonna slap you one for some forgotten-childish-school-yard-prank you failed to recall and subsequently scared them for life (ahem!.... you know who you are!).
While Goober & myself played out this action I suddenly realised a parallel with past times.. Here we were, standing in a large full room, away from the crowd and being ignored by everyone........ sort of sums up almost every assembly, breaktime and gathering at Easington Comprehensive I attended. The jury's still out on whether I find this comforting or depressing.

I'm finding it difficult to write about any of the people I chatted with. Mainly because the discussion tended to revolve around me doing sumert embarrassing at school or which would cause upset to people who know me. It was at this point I decided not to play any mind games, these people were starting to interest me, and I got involved in some very grown up conversations (Mr Shepherd & Super spring to mind). The phrase "I only drink to make other people more interesting" was loosing its credibility.

Not everything went to plan tho'. I did meet some scary people, maybe they were playing mind games with me? I was simply too drunk to work it out. One person in particular re-lighted my plan for mind games when they attempted to use psychology on Goober for no other reason than to impress. I wont go into details, but someone from our school now thinks I'm a Jingle writer for commercial radio and part time Reverend in the Universal Life Church (births, deaths & marriages are ok, circumcisions are a no-no) and exiting with a suspected colostomy bag failure got me a head start for the door.

Apparently we're all doing it again in five years. With a bit of luck, I'll be there.

Thanks to the people who organised the reunion, a top night was had. Thanks
